Hannah Hethmon is an independent museum and public history professional. Currently based in Warsaw, she is the producer and host of Museums in Strange Places, a podcast that explores the world through museums. She has a master's degree in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies.
In 2013, Hannah moved to Iceland for two years to do her Master's degree in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies. During that time, she did an exchange semester in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 2015, she moved back to the greater Washington, D.C. area for a few months before moving to Nashville, Tennessee for work. In 2017, Hannah returned to Iceland for a Fulbright Fellowship to learn Icelandic and study Icelandic museums. In May 2018, she moved to Warsaw, Poland to live with her Finnish husband for the first time after a 4 year long-distance relationship that started in Iceland in 2014.
Hannah juggled a long distance relationship, reverse culture shock and studying in Iceland.

βEverytime I move, I go through a lot of crying!β
When coming home...
Emotions and differences Hannah faced - This was a challenge to start new groups of friends. Hannah cried a lot when she got home. She was also in a long distance relationship.
What had changed for Hannah - She was in a job with many people older than her so she didnβt really relate to them. Building the community and making friends with like minded friends.
Biggest stress for Hannah - Long distance relationship, feeling lonely yet excited to be in a new place.
How Hannah supported herself - Met people through groups, she wished there was a βTinderβ for friends and then she found this on Bumble BFF. Hannah called and spoke to her mum a lot. Hannah started hobbies such as cooking, yoga and getting into a routine. She found the joy in a normal daily routine
How her mindset had changed - She was exposed to a lot of ways of thinking, looked at the religion she followed and started to explore her beliefs a little more. Started volunteering and trying to find connections
3 Lessons learned from travel and reverse culture shock
Its important to have people around you that you can count on.
Go to museums as these places hold stories and people who are very passionate to share with you.
Wait before you apply stereotypes to others and be willing to see people honestly.
Advise to herself for returning home - Meet people as fast as you can, find anyone to do things with and then enjoy the place your at. There is always something to learn. Find the things you have never seen where you are.
βI want to keep moving but it takes me about 2 years to form a solid community.β

Welcoming chaos after sailing the Bahamas with Anne Fricke
Annie is a poet, writer, podcaster and mother of 3 daughters. She lives in the beauty of the redwood coast in Northern California so, even though she loves to travel abroad, she also always loves to come home. Annie went sailing in the Bahamas for months at a time with her husband and her oldest daughter. The first time she went was when her daughter was 17 months old. Anne has also embraced adventures to the Baja in a Volkswagen, the mainland of Mexico in a cab-over-camper, Europe for two months in a rental car, hostels and B&Bs and some time in Mexico, Baja and Guatemala with all three of her daughters.
Anne, her husband and first daughter would often escape to sail the Bahamas for months on end, returning to the real world with a more calm approach to life.

βThe colour of the water and the colour of the sky just blend together and youβre just in this quite blue bubble.β
When coming home...
Emotions and differences Anne faced - The chaos of so many people and things and all the anxiety that comes along with that. Everything seemed to be moving so much faster than life on the boat. She also found it nice to be in the comforts of home.
What had changed for Anne - So many choices when going into the store - especially the grocery store.
What was challenging for Anne - Being a mother of young child and seeing what other mothers were doing whilst she had chosen a different style of path.
How her mindset changed - Learned to not get involved in petty things when returning home. She had a more relaxed approach to life.
3 Lessons learned from travel and reverse culture shock
You get to see humanity and connect with people from so many walks of life.
Have faith that things will be ok.
Being open to trying lots of different things, especially eating and trying different foods.
Advise to herself for returning home - Trust the life she was living and everything was all good and beautiful and not to question where she was at.
βTrust the life we were living and that it was all good and beautiful.β

How her mindset had changed - She has always
3 Lessons learned from travel and reverse culture shock
Donβt get stuck in a comfort zone, it will restrict you.
Find your passion, what is it that you love?
Everything works out how it should.
Advise to herself for returning home - Not to worry about what happens, know that it might be hard and it might be different. The travel is worth what you experience when you come home.
βHaving no comfort zone means that you are willing to do just do things. If you want to book a trip or go overseas, if you want to live somewhere, dont just say that you are going to do it, actually do it!β

About Kate
Kate supports and coaches courageous women to create the life they deserve when they relocate to a brand new city or country. Her first international move was to Qatar, where she lived for over 5 years she then relocated to Australia and has been living here for the past 2 years.
Kate is passionate about helping other women who are planning a move, have just moved and who want to start creating the life that they want to lead.
βIf something is presented to you, really do weigh up the pros and cons of it.β
When coming home...
Emotions and differences that Kate faced - Expected it was going to be the same as when she had left but realised that life had moved on without her. In particular her friendships had changed as she had not balanced them as well as she had liked.
What had changed for Kate - Kate had not lived in her home town for about 10 years, she was so used to being away and being the βexternal family member.β Kate felt really lost after living the ex-pat life and noticed she had really changed as a person. Didnβt think it was the place for her to settle.
Biggest stress - How to fit back into the life that had moved on whilst you had not been there.
How Kate supported herself - Took time out to look after herself. Kate started to build some self-care rituals and have some time out for herself.
How her mindset changed - Enjoy the opportunities that are in front of you, be in the moment and enjoy it. Learned how to manage homesickness and saying goodbye to her friends and family.
3 Lessons learned from travel and reverse culture shock
The importance of routine, keep busy.
Embrace the opportunities that are presented to you
Balancing friendships and keep them going however you can.
Advise to herself for returning home - Id start planning to meet like minded friends when I was returning home so I had a support network and people who would understand what I was going through.
βThe stress was how to fit back into life that had moved on so much when you have not been there.β

Danielle fuses her experience from traveling the world for the last 10 years with her coaching skills to help others break free and connect with themselves, their passions and one another.
βItβs a lot easier when your travelling to make new friends because everyone is in that zone but its hard when you come back home and everyone is in their normal routine.β
When coming home...
Emotions and differences Danielle faced - Not loose herself in the process of integrating as she didnβt realise she would stay for so long. Things are familiar and the same which is different to when you travel where everything is new and exciting. Not experiencing as much diversity as in her travels.
What had changed for Danielle - There was a big contrast in her friendship groups and what their interests and experiences were.
How Danielle supported herself - Went to workshops and events that resonated with her and put herself out there to create a community and network. Used Meet up to find new friends. Allow yourself to shine and be the person you want to be, if not you risk not attracting the people who you ultimately want to connect with.
3 Lessons learned from travel and reverse culture shock
To be unapologetically myself - there is no such thing as normal or one way to do things.
The power of connection with other humans.
The value of giving back and sharing your life in someway with others - being involved in stuff that matters to you.
Advise to herself for returning home - Just breath, dont be in a rush to have all the answers, trust the opportunities that come and put one foot in front of the other.
βYou have to be vulnerable and brave enough to show all the parts of yourself.β
